Read this before you reach for the hair dye! 1. Want to go lighter? Watch out if your hair's in poor condition, as the ends can often grab extra tone, which leaves a blue or pink tinge. 2. Ivory or cream complexions suit a cooler shade of blonde. A medium or darker complexion should go warmer.
3. If you're the sort of person who constantly bleaches, use an intensive conditioner regularly to stop losing moisture. 4. Avoid colour shampoos - coloured blonde hair is porous and can grab too much pigment, leaving unwanted highlights. 5. Avoid products with alcohol, as they can dull blonde hair. 6. Use shampoos and conditioners for colour treated hair with UV protection for a longer-lasting colour. 7. Many women with dark hair go blonde - Angelina Jolie for example - but can look washed out. Choose a hazlenut or caramel shade (see our MM Beauty series). 8. If your blonde hair looks brassy and overdone, reverse the process slowly, growing out the roots, then adding darker lowlights, in order to avoid unpleasant colour surprises. 9. Thinking about highlighting at home? Start with hair that's free of styling products, as these can make colour uneven. 10. Once you're blonde, wear less makeup than when you had dark hair. Go for soft, sheer colours.
